The Spelling checker is turned on by pressing F7, or from the menu under
Tools|SpellCheck or from the toolbar icon consisting of "ABC" above a
checkmark. There is also an icon for Auto Spellcheck which is "ABC"
underlined with a red squiggle. Pressing F1 and entering "spell" as the
Search Term would have gotten you to this answer a lot faster than
waiting for a reply from the list.
There isn't a grammar checker in OOo.
