I've installed open office, but have no icons to execute any of the

Where is the "seagull" icon? It should be in the System Tray, near the
clock. Right click on it and choose what you want to do - text document,
spreadsheet etc.
If, as it appears you said, the seagull icon is on the desktop then you
seem to have not followed the installation instructions properly. The
installation of OpenOffice is a three stage process:
1. Download the installer.
2. Run the installer. This step unpacks itself into a whole bunch of
files which are put into a directory of your choosing Typically this
directory is put on the desktop. The installer then *automatically*
performs the 3rd step which is
3. Run the setup program which resulted from step 2. This actually
installs the software and, depending on your choices, puts the program
"group" in the All Programs section of the Start menu and puts the
seagull icon into the System Tray.
Once step 3 is complete, the directory created in step 2 and *all* its
contents, can be deleted. It plays no further part in your use of
OpenOffice. Similarly, the original file you downloaded can be deleted
although I prefer to keep mine as a backup to avoid having to do the
download again if anything goes wrong. I typically store it on my D:
drive (separate disk) whereas the program itself is installed on the C:
drive.
