Hello Harold,
I am most grateful for your helpful and detailed reply, which I have
printed out in full.
Unfortunately I am still not able to uninstall the version I
downloaded about 10 days ago. I have ensured that the quickstarter
icon by the clock tray has been closed and is not running. When I use
the Add/Remove programs routine it still fails to uninstall, and
presents the message window which states
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur
if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer
is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for
assistance."
I am hoping that the following comments will prove helpful for you.
1) it also mentioned version 2.0.9073 and comments OpenOffice
2.0(en-US) (OOD680m5(build9073)
2) This is the first time in many years that I have ever had any
problem in uninstalling a program and I presently have 101 programs
in the list. I am not running in safe mode.
3) If that problem cannot be resolved, I could use ZTreeWin which I
use a lot for internal aspects within programs that I use for
genealogy, but I do know that should not be the first choice for
removing a program such as the one in question.
I would be grateful for further advice on my problem, and there is no
immediate hurry as I go on holiday first thing on Thursday 14th until
Wednesday 27th.

Have you got the file you downloaded originally to install the *old*
version? Someone suggested re-running the installation process for that
version and selecting the Repair or the Remove option if those exist.
The theory says that 2.1 should happily install over the top of any 2.x
version but theory says bumble bees can't fly; or, at least, it did
until *very* recently.
Other than that I'm afraid I have no other ideas, short of sitting at
your computer and "sniffing" around. Do you have a tame Windows guru you
could consult? It sounds to me as if there is something wrong with your
Windows installation but I'm afraid it's not possible for me to diagnose
this by remote control. Oh, have you tried running Safe mode and
removing the old version from there?
Anybody ???
Have a good holiday.
