Have you got the file you downloaded originally to install the *old* version? Someone suggested re-running the installation process for that version and selecting the Repair or the Remove option if those exist. Other than that I'm afraid I have no other ideas, short of sitting at your computer and "sniffing" around. Do you have a tame Windows guru you could consult? It sounds to me as if there is something wrong with your Windows installation but I'm afraid it's not possible for me to diagnose this by remote control. Oh, have you tried running Safe mode and removing the old version from there?

I think this may be a case for a registry cleaner.
