Thanks to Adrian and Terry for their help with this.

I didn't realize that Impress stores images at their original resolutions in
its data file - I had naively assumed that they would be stored at some
reduced resolution based on the size they appeared when I created the
presentation. So, reducing their size to something more reasonable makes a
big difference.

As a matter of interest, I used a free batch image processing prog called
BIMP Lite to do the resizing.

Strangely, when we reopened the original presentation with the huge images,
Impress was not terribly slow this time. No hour-glasses when inserting
text, for example. So, the slowness problem is dependent on past history in
some way.

I also tried making some of the adjustments suggested by Adrian. Increasing
the Graphics Cache seemed to make a big improvement. Going to and from a
slide with many images is now very smooth. However, it didn't seem to make
any difference at all on a Linux system (admittedly an old laptop and
probably underpowered).

Thanks again.

Peter
