I used the official OpenOffice, not the Ubuntu build, and loaded it on
my Ubuntu 6.2.
I took the RPMs and used alien to shift them to debs. Had to use the
-scripts option on two of them.
I then installed these with dpkg.
What I ended up with was a /usr directory in the OO folder on the
Desktop, and within that several icons, including one entitled 'soffice.'
clicking on that icon got me an error message saying that the folder
directory /etc/openoffice did not exist.
As a last resort, I did 'locate openoffice_2.1', and found that it had
been put into /opt, where it had always been before. I then ran the
install, and set up an swriter icon on my Quickstart Panel (or whatever
the official term is for that panel at the top of the Ubuntu screen. :-) )
Openoffice 2.1 works just fine now, it totally replaced the previous OOo
2.0.3.
This is not meant as a question or complaint, just a rundown of how I
got through the install. I wonder if there are any other people out
there, not entirely conversant with computers, (perhaps even especially
with Linux) who think somethings wrong because they couldn't get it to
go through the whole procedure to put up an icon on the screen.
I wonder if there are occasions where they might just try the 'locate'
utility, then get into the appropriate directory and start the install
from within. I'm not saying it woud work every time; problems are often
different. It might be worth trying in some cases.
