OpenOffice.org (OOo) is more secure than MS Office. There has
only been on virus known that would affect OOo. Furthermore, most
viruses, trojan horses, etc. are macros. Before OOo opens a file
which contains a macro, a warning pops up giving you the choice to
open the file or not.
OOo designed differently so it is not susceptible to the viruses
and trojans that can plague MS Office. This does mean that any macros
written in MS Office have to be rewritten to work. (The macro
language is similar to VBA, but there are enough differences to
prevent the macros from running as is.)
Since OOo is a downloaded file, the OOo download web page as a
small section on md5sum.exe which can be used to verify the file you
download is the same as the file created by OOo.
However, if you are using Windows, you need a good firewall and a
current anti-virus program running on your computer anytime it is
connected to the Internet.
