Hi Alicia
I am using Open office 2.0. I did an Impress for my classwork and
uploaded it
to my professo (after spending hours trying to make my picture files
small
enough to go through e-mail). So my prof finally got the file but he was
not
able to upload it to the site for the class, so no one got to see my
beautiful
presentation. He asked me to try to send it to him using a button which
exists
in powerpoint but does not exist in Impress. It was something like 'pack
and
send' or 'pack up and send'.
Firstly, let me make a few guesses. I'll guess that your professor uses
Microsoft Office, and also that you saved your presentation in the
PowerPoint XP format. (If you sent your professor the slideshow in
OpenOffice format, he would have to use OpenOffice to play the slideshow.)
Next, I'll guess that your problem has something to do with the Powerpoint
file extension. Let me explain. Powerpoint uses two different file
extensions for its slideshows. The actual files are identical, but the
different extensions let Windows know what to do with the file. (By the
way, a file extension is the three letters that come after the dot in the
filename, which are often hidden by Windows.)
1. .PPT is the normal file extension used for Powerpoint. When you double
click on a .PPT file, the presentation is opened in Powerpoint for editing.
2. .PPS is the "slideshow" extension for Powerpoint. When you double click
on a .PPS file, the slideshow is automatically started.
So assuming my first guesses are correct, then I think your problem is
that you sent a .PPT file when your professor was expecting a .PPS file.
The solution is simple - rename the .PPT extension to .PPS. Unfortunately,
Windows makes it almost impossible to make that simple change. I can't
tell you the exact steps (I don't have a Windows computer nearby), but in
your My Computer options (under the Tools menu), there is an option
somewhere that hides file extensions. You have to untick that option.
After that, when you rename the file (press F2, or right click and select
Rename), you should be able to change the .PPT to .PPS).
I hope that makes sense. It may be that my guesses were totally wrong. If
I did guess wrong, please email the list with more details: especially how
you saved the file.
