James,

At some point, it will become more valuable to have your time than money and you will buy more memory.

I think I'm at that point now :)

Guess memory is the only solution; and since you haven't commented on the Fonts, I guess, that is ok.

Thanks for your reply.

I will chime in here and add a few comments as a long time computer user:

1. The more memory the better.
2. You do not have enough free space on your hard drive to do much. I would feel better if your free space was around 5 to 10 GB. 3. You are trying to use too many programs at one time. iTunes, Firefox and OpenOffice.org are ALL memory hogs. 4. Limit the number of open applications to only one or two at one time that are memory hoggers.

A very technical explanation of what is happening follows:

Most modern computer operating systems take advantage of a function called virtual memory, that is faking memory that does not exist. What this does is allow more programs to run that would be possible in physical memory. However, if you run several programs that like to use physical memory or you run many programs at one time, they can cause a condition called thrashing. This is where the memory subsystem is constantly moving programs in use from physical (RAM) to virtual (hard disk drive) and back. This will slow down your system to the point where it is unusable. The solution is the four steps I listed above.

At some point, it will become more valuable to have your time than money and you will buy more memory. I highly recommend at least 512 MB of RAM if you are running Tiger, iTunes and OpenOffice.org. Add Firefox and any sort of Keyboard interpeter and you are asking much of a system with that amount of memory and more likely would see improved performance with
1GB or more of memory.

If you can hear your hard disk reading/writing, then or look in
Activity Monitor's "System Memory" tab and watch how fast the Page

Can't do much about it. Am expecting to upgrade memory, but it's
pretty costly out here in India and not easily available too :(

The times here seem to show that you have some major problem with
your computer.

Run the Activity Monitor, and see if there are any processes that
takes up lots of processor time.
How much space do you have left on your hard drive?

If you don't have enough, then you will have problems. Several
gigabytes free is best.

Well, usually when I start Ooo, I also like to listen to iTunes, and
usually Firefox would also be open. :)

I also have Sizzling Keys installed/running for iTunes control. These
seem to be the memory hoggers... but

I also have around 2.1 GB free hard disk space.

Have you tried restarting?

Have you tried using another user account on your mac?

Just prior to getting your email, I trashed every damn thing-
NeoOffice and Openoffice, reinstalled and still have the same problem.

BTW, when I first run Ooo, it asked whether I'd like to use the
System Fonts, which I answered Yes... could this be causing the
problem? Earlier too, (a long time ago), when using Neo and Ooo, I
had faced the problem that they couldn't handle the fonts... and I
had to use some workaround to clear that (now I don't remember what
that workaround was and can't find it on the websites).

NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org can co-exist no problem.

Well now at least I think they are in different folder(s), though NOW
i can't seem to find NeoOffice folder(s) ?!! (It should be in ~/
Library/Neooffice- the last one was, apart from the system folder)

Finally not related to above: How do you create those bars (at the
left of your comments) and add the comments in the way you have done?
(I mean an easier way- I copy-pasted the stuff above)?

d/loaded ooo 2.1 recently. Have used Ooo earlier also (earliest
versions) but then switched to Neo Office. Now using Ooo with X11.
(or rather trying)

Problem: I have a PC too and use Ooo for Win there and have
created an .ods file with some important information. I also saved
that .ods file in .sxc and .xls formats. All these were opening
correctly and properly in Ooo for Win.

However, when I try to open the same in mac... then

a) X11 screen comes up and nothing happens for quite some time
(almost 3 minutes)
b) Ooo comes up with the splash screen (another 2 minutes)
c) by the time Writer opens up, it's almost 7-8 minutes.
d) then I select the .ods file and it tries to open (2 minutes)
e) finally the calc window seems to open (i.e. there is just an
outline that opens, while everything else is blank), and the
status bar shows the progress meter 'blueing out" and just when
the blue bar has almost reached the far right, the whole damn app
quits w/o notice.

I still have neooffice loaded, but Ooo page(s) had said that
shouldn't be a problem.

NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org can co-exist no problem.

Tried to trash Ooo prefs but couldnt find them. A finder search,
showed me SEVERAL Ooo folders under the NeoOffice1.1. folder
structure, as well as one standalone Ooo folder.

The openoffice prefs for 2.1 are stored in ~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org 2.1

HELP. I'd rather use my mac Mini than the PC and Ooo than MS
office. Even neooffice is getting pretty slow.

:-)
BTW, that .ods file has a few charts and lots of numbers and
calculations. So there is nothing heavy in the file.

Once again HELP
