Actually, you can associate a shortcut with a special character, using a
macro. I don't remember exactly how I managed it first, but I introduced
(in OO Writer) the following shortcuts ("Maj" means the Uppercase Key):
<Ctrl><Maj> i : í (iacute)
<Ctrl><Maj>s : ß
<Ctrl><Maj>a : å
I am sure someone will be able to give you more precise information.

Thanks to those who responded. What I ended up doing was using a little
freeware program called Hotkeyz
<http://www.skynergy.com/hotkeyz.html>. It
allows you to build macros and assign hotkeys. This gave me the
flexibility
to choose any hotkey combination, unlike inside Writer. It works, but it
would be better if Writer offered assigning hotkeys directly in the
Special
Caharacter menu the way word does. As it is I need to wait for the macro
execution to finish before typin another letter.

You can assign them by using a macro to insert the special
character. There
is a document explaining how to do that. It may be the "special
characters"
or another document listed on the page
http://documentation.openoffice.org./HOW_TO/index.html
If not, it is on one of the related pages in
http://documentation.openoffice.org./
