In short - is there a method of getting a **paragraph style** to make the
first word bold, and the remaining words regular ?

No. The only pp style setting that even comes close is the "Drop Caps"
feature, and that forces the first word to also be larger (at least two
lines high).
You can however automate this fairly easily.
Edit > Find & Replace
Search for: ^[^ ]+
Click "More Options" and "Regular Expressions" ON (checked)
Click "Find All"
This will find and select the first word of every paragraph. Now, while
this selection is still in effect, you can either click the "bold"
button to use direct formatting, or use the Stylist (F11) to apply a
character style such as "Strong Emphasis". Personally, I would define a
specific style for this, something like "First word" or "Heading inline"
and then use that.
Once the character style is applied, you can change the style settings
to make the first words have any appearance you like, without repeating
the search.
You will have to manually apply the style to the first words subsequently.
Caution: this will also find the first words of all headers, titles or
any other text. If that's a problem, there's an easy way around that,
just ask.
