OpenOffice is compatible in the sense that it can read and write documents in Microsoft format. The convertion usually goes very well, except when complicated formatting is used in the file.

What happens is that your colleague sends you documents in the native OpenOffice format of a textdocument. Microsoft refuses to make Office able to read this standardised format. Your colleague needs to do one of two options:

1. If you only need to read the files she can send you a PDF-copy of the document by using File>Send>Send as PDF on her computer 2. If you need to edit the file she should send you a copy of the document in MS-Office format by using File>Send>Send as Microsoft Word.

You will then receive an email containing an attachment that can be viewed with Adobe Reader (option 1) or MS-Word (option 2).

Hello there,

I have a colleague who has installed Open Office, but when she sends me files marked .odt Microsoft will not open them. What can I do? (apart from installing Open Office myself but this is not an option at work). You say you are compatible and I presume you mean that you can open Word files, but the opposite is not true. Please help.
Thanks a lot.
Sincerely,
Ann Cottington
