I'm using OO 2.0
When opening a file from a USB key, after closing Writer, the USB key
cannot be removed. The process soffice.exe remains active. After
killing it, everythings OK.
Before trying to remove the key, exit Quickstarter. On Windows this is
represented by an icon in the System Tray. The icon is blue/grey and has
flying birds on it. Right click on the icon and choose Exit. Things will
differ somewhat on Linux or Mac but, hopefully, you can deduce what to
do if necessary.
You can permanently disable Quickstarter either
a) from its own icon by right clicking and clearing the tick against
"Load OpenOffice at start up" (or similar wording) or
b) from within, say, Writer, by going to
Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Memory and unselecting "Load OpenOffice at
start up" (or similar wording).
If you permanently disable Quickstarter then you won't need to exit it
each time before removing your USB key but OOo will take longer to start
from cold.
