I hope that you have a suggestion that will help me. My default
browser is
Aol. Whether I dowload openoffice via Aol or Internet Explorer, the
dowload is saved as an Aol document and will not allow me to open it
to continue the installation due to the file size. It says that Aol
can't open it because the file is too large. Is there a better way
that I should download it so that I can proceed to open it and
complete the installation. I am running windows 98 and have been
trying to install the legacy version that is one step newer than the
Win 95 version. Any suggestions?

I thought AOL had stopped playing these games years ago and had become a "proper" ISP. Have you got an ancient version of their software? Upgrading to the latest AOL software will buy you a much better internet/web experience.

I can offer three suggestions:
1. Disconnect from AOL; rename the file you downloaded so that the last 4 characters are ".exe" (that's a dot followed by the letters e, x and e); double click the renamed file to get Windows to run it. I don't know enough about whatOL has done to be really confident that this will work; but it might.

2. Talk to AOL. They really shouldn't be restricting your use of the web in this way.

3. (You may want oto renumber this to 2)
If all else fails you could order OpenOffice on CD at http://distribution.openoffice.org/cdrom/index.html#cdrom. You will have to pay a nominal amount to cover the distributor's cost of producing the CD and, probably, a small amount for postage. Think about having to pay approximately USD 10.
