Barbara:

How long is it taking for your download to process?

If you place a Mac in sleep mode and you are downloading 
the file, Safari will discard it and stop the download.  
Firefox will do the same thing.  This is for your safety as 
a partially downloaded file will not function properly.

I suggest either not placing your system in sleep mode or
attempting the download when you have sufficient time to
complete the download.
