Hi, Let me share what I would do in your situation. If you are really concerned with your personal email address being seen, I would go to a website like yahoo that provides free email accounts. Sign up for a free email account, subscribe that account and unsubscribe your current one, and use it exclusively for your openoffice emails (and any other regular emails you sign up for). That way you don't have to worry about your personal email account in future correspondence. I personally would not be real concerned with this openoffice email though. I would be more concerned going to chat rooms where literally ANYONE could be on and are usually not moderated.

Although I am also new to this email list, this is my basic understanding of how it works (judging from the emails I have received). It seems that whenever anyone sends an email/question to [email protected], it is sent to everyone on the "users" mailing list, and also the website. In that sense everyone who subscribes is a "user." In that way, everyone has an opportunity to answer any questions they know the answer to, everyone gets to learn from that, and you have a pretty excellent chance of getting your question answered (you just asked your question to tons of people who could help). In my personal opinion, that's a smart way of doing it. In addition to that the emails are moderated, so you don't have to worry much about spammers, objectionable material, etc. As far as my understanding, the more you become familiar with Open Office, you may be able to answer some of those questions too, and in that way contribute to the Open Office project.

I hope that helps you out, and I hope it wasn't too lengthy.

Hello -

How do I delete the message in the system from 22 Nov 2005 which
displays my name and email address - I wanted that to be private...
How can I make it so it doesn't show up in a search engine?

In a nutshell, you can't, and it doesn't matter:

1) it's almost impossible that the list maintainers will listen to you
without a court order to remove or modify that page, also because
probably it would be a complicated procedure)

2) at this point, it's even useless to ask: even if the OO.o
   webmasters did what you ask:

the archives are replicated in many other places, and even the
ooo page is already in Google's and other search engine pages
all a spammer has to do to collect addresses in real time is
subscribe to the list: every subscriber to the mailing list
       receives the whole raw message.

the first time one replies to your messages in any list the
address may show there (in the attribution line, where I
manually put "Don't count on this next time..."

other reasons which I am not going to write now, also because
all this discussion already happened. Check this thread:

http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=discuss&by=thread&from=1493788

This said, yes, it would be great (if nothing else as a good example,
since it wouldn't solve anything practically) if the ooo archives
didn't behave in this way.

Ciao,
        Marco
