2007/1/14, Dennis J. Tuchler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

For various reasons, I need to know about the Mac version of
OpenOffice.org. I notice that on the download window, there are two
classes -- Thoroughly tested and Other. Mac OS version is under the
latter. Just what does this mean in terms of features, stability and
future support?

Thanks for your time

Hello Dennis

The Mac version of OpenOffice.org takes some more time because it has a
smaller team of (volunteer) developers than the Windows and Linux versions.
Furthermore, the team is still struggling to provide a native (Aqua) version
for the Mac. At the moment, Mac users need the X11 windowing system to run
OpenOffice.org on the Mac.

You can find more info on the porting of OOo on Mac at the site
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/
you'll also find how to install X11 and OOo on your Mac. There are different
versions of X11 for Panther (OSX 10.3.x) and Tiger (OSX 10.4.x), and
different version of OOo for PowerPC's and Intel Macs. Be sure to chose the
right versions.

The latest version of OOo (2.1.0) is available for PowerPC and for Intel
Macs in different languages (English, French, etc.). This version is
thoroughly testes and approved.

[For other languages (German, Dutch,...) this version is also available, but
it isn't completely tested ('release candidate', not declared 'stable'). If
you prefer a stable version of OOo in one of these other languages, you have
to revert to version. 2.0.4.
The Aqua version is still in the experimental phase.]

Don't hesitate to try it out! Good luck
