I have tried OpenOffice.org 2.0 with Windows 98 (first edition) and it
worked. It was terribly slow on my very old machine (dec 1998), but it
worked. I don't know about OpenOffice.org 2.1, since I only installed
it on
my new machine with XP.

I'm not sure but it might be Win98SE that is needed.

I use it for the OOo lists and only rarely read other mails sent to it.

I ran Open Office 1.1.3 on my Winders machine. I have 98SE on it. It has
1.2 gig AMD Athlon and an ASUS A7N8X-X Mobo. It was so so. I had to
uninstall it because it did not get along with MS Office, which I am
stuck with as Open Office mangles highly formated government documents
that are created in Word, etc.
I run the latest version of Open Office that comes with Fedora Core 5 on
my Linux box which has hardware almost identical to my winders box.
