You may not have to go to those lengths.  If you rename the file causing the
problem (while OOo is shut down), a replacement should be created when you
restart the software.  The replacement file may (and should) respond to
changes through the GUI.

I might add that I made the settings in my OOo with version 1.1.4 and they
have persisted with updates until my present version (2.0.2).  I've never
had occasion to look at them until yesterday, in order to track down the
relevant files.
