James,

Couldn't have said it better myself.

X11 is a much faster environment on any machine.
Carl: To compare launch times, I do the following: launch, then quit the application three times consecutively, then time the fourth launch. NeoOffice is slower in firing up (about 18") than OOo (about 9"). But it's also slower in its GUI, a result of the Java which is executed, no doubt.

There is a phrase for this: Your Milage May Vary.

You have a slow machine to begin with. NeoOffice.org is very 'heavy' on a faster machine and it is noticeable on both my PowerBook G4/1.5 and MacBookPro 2.0/2. I'm not going to
discuss this further.

Hmmmm. NeoOffice on my G3/400, OS 10.3.9, is faster to load and runs
about the same speed. Load time is my big complaint with OOo (even
NeoOffice isn't fast).

Hi James,

I can only guess here, but maybe, although "not computer-savvy" as she put it, she may know enough to fire up and use an X11 app. And maybe she is also tired of the sluggishness of NeoOffice (no offense here,
but it _is_ slow, esp. when compared to the X11 version).

I don't know if I am alone here saying that I feel NeoOffice weighs
heavily on my Powerbook's performance, causing it to intensely write- in
and out of HD and RAM. I haven't experienced any of this with OOo.

Just my guess, like I said.

What I would like to know is why Sue wants to stop using
NeoOffice.org.

You are correct, both NeoOffice.org and OpenOffice.org
can exist on the same machine, as I did this for many
months.

Hi Sue,

You need to go to the OpenOffice.org downloads site, then select the
MacOS X download, then specify if you need the Intel or PowerPC
version, depending on what Mac Mini model you own (hint: if you go to
the top left of your screen and click on the blue Apple logo, then
select 'About This Mac', a window will pop up showing you some basic info of your setup, for instance: "Processor: 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4").

You don't need to uninstall NeoOffice, by the way; the two programs
can happily co-exist side by side.

Hope this helps.

Alex.

I want to download Open Office onto my Mac Mini. I am not computer savvy so which option do I pick to download Open Office. I will be
un-installing Neo Office afterward. If you could reply today I
would really appreciate it.
Thank you
