Hi;
I too have noticed the number of questions from brand new users about
where the rest of the OOo programs are. Might I suggest that the
default start up for OOo include a toolbar with launchers for the
spreadsheet, write, presentations etc. The tool tip for each icon
could
include terse explanatory comments and/or shortcuts.
I think an additional toolbar would make the existence of the modes
other than Write obvious, easily removable in Views, and would not
require any further changes to the program.
I remember the first time I used OOo (in Linux). What had been
intuitive in M$ Office turned out to be just Pavlovian, however, I
would
never have thought of looking under File => New =>. 'New' would have
meant new Word (Write) document only.

My understanding is that there are two problems relate to the Mac and
Windows. The Mac problem seems to be one that OpenOffice cannot
fix - it
relates to a deficiency in the OS. I would have thought it was a
simple
matter for the Windows installer to create desktop icons, which
seems to be
what people want.
There are 3 places I can think of in OS X where multiple icons for
the different programs could be placed during install. The Desktop,
the Dock and the Applications folder.
This is a 'defficiency' in OpenOffice.org not OS X, though I have to
admit I don't know whether it is possible to acheive this whilst OOo
still runs in X11.
Hopefully (?) this is be resolved when there is a 'proper' version
for Mac that uses the Aqua interface.
