Can you please explain the D&D that you are trying to do in more detail?

OK, let's suppose I had written your response above. And I want to
move "What are you trying to D&D?" from where it is in the middle of
the paragraph to the start of the paragraph. So I select the sentence
and drag it to the start of the paragraph. That worked fine since forever in OOo (I started with Staroffice
5.-something), but it broke after upgrading from Dapper amd64 with 2.02
to Edgy amd64 with 2.04. I can select the sentence, but can't drag it
anywhere. In order to move it my only option is Cut and Paste.

Yes, I can do that w/2.1 on Dapper with no problems at all (in addition
to being able to D&D to/from the desktop & other apps).

Everybody can do this in all versions of OOo on all platforms. The bug
affects only (as far as I know) myself and two other users of Ubuntu
Edgy. I am on Edgy amd64, but the other two posted to a general Ubuntu
forum, so I don't know if they are on 32-bit or 64-bit. They also did
not post that they had found a fix. And I e-mailed them individually,
but have received no replies. In short, it is evidently a very obscure
bug. There may be more people affected than I have found, but if only
three people have reported it, it's safe to assume that it's very
infrequent.

I wonder if this is related:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/62432

That deals with crashing when pasting into other apps. OOo never
crashes for me. The only problems I have are that D&D of text inside
OOo does not work, and I can't get default tab settings to stick.

I have reinstalled it, but that did not change anything. I need to find
out what library the D&D of text uses. Perhaps that library is missing
or broken. That would explain why reinstalling OOo did not fix the
problem.

I've been reading this with some interest,. as I am using the "official" version of OO2.1 on Ubuntu Dapper. I've been doing a lot of editing recently, and have never yet had a problem with Drag and Drop.

I will never use the Ubuntu build of Open Office, because I don't trust it. Besides being consistently one version behind, something is almost always broken about it. For a long time they were leaving the Thesaurus out, though after a while the Thesaurus could be loaded as a separate component. They had some explanation as to why they "couldn't" include the Thesaurus, but on the other hand, using the 'alien' utility, I could install the "real" version, with working Thesaurus.

No one has yet told me what little bits they chop off Thunderbird or Firefox to make them fit; the only upside is that it's the easiest distro I've fond to work with so far, and it allows me to drop MS altogether.
