It is said to improve performance.  Think of a cell style as a format
template.  Instead of formatting each cell, you format a template.  Then
apply the template to relevant cells.

I remembered later that I gave up on styles to create borders because the
cells to be bordered had different number formats so I would have needed a
border style for each number format.  In my case, the border serves to rule
off a week in a table of daily data - a much simpler situation than yours.

File an issue, if you have the patience and time.  (Erk!)
