Hi Ian and welcome

Licensing issues are in the FAQ at
http://www.openoffice.org/FAQs/faq-licensing.html

In general, OOo is free and unrestricted for installation on as many
computers as you wish, and you can give it to any of the students to
take home as well.

You may want to ask the college legal advisers to look at the licensing,
just to be sure.
