I am presently using WORD for Windows and have created templates containing
shortcut keys for typing Turkish, some Ottoman Turkish, and English on the same
keyboard. This is easy to do in WORD but I can't see how it can be done in
Writer. Is this possible? I am very new to this and may be missing something
obvious.

Try installing "AltkeyHandler" which enables you to assign various
things to Alt-<key>, Shift-Alt-<key>, etc.
It is available from:
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/hillview/OOo
(scroll down a bit)
There are instructions for installing on OOo 1.x or 2.x
I use it for typing various mathematical symbols quickly, and find that
it works very nicely.
Hope that is of some help.
