There are also a free program called AllChars. Unfortunately it's Windows
only and it's not OpenSource. Yet...
I like it anyway and I use it all the time.

Try installing "AltkeyHandler" which enables you to assign various
things to Alt-<key>, Shift-Alt-<key>, etc.

There are instructions for installing on OOo 1.x or 2.x

I use it for typing various mathematical symbols quickly, and find that
it works very nicely.
