Hi,

Have you tried to rename the file so that it does have the correct extension for Word Perfect before trying to open it? (I'm not sure what the extension should be). Failing that, are you sure that this particular file that you have been sent has reached you intact and has not been damaged? It might be worth asking for it to be sent again, or failing that ask for the person who is sending it to you to try a different format such as RTF.

Any other suggestions anyone?

Hope this helps

Tom

Thanks, Tom Chilton,
It is true that I am receiving attachments from a friend using Word Perfect Professional (but the files do not show a Word Perfect extension). In OpenOffice I have been able to open the files beautifully, until yesterday. Yesterday he sent a file and I went through the process to open it in OpenOffice; but when I clicked on it to open it in OpenOffice Writer, it would not open, quit responding. Every time I tried, a new icon appeared in my system tray area. At one time I had 5 OpenOffice icons in that bottom right area of the windows task manager bar. I finally shut OpenOffice down. This morning I had a similar problem but was successful in opening documents I had already saved. I saved them in MS Word XP.doc. But I still can't open the attachment I received yesterday from my friend. By the way, when he discovered that I was opening his Word Perfect documents in OpenOffice without a hitch (that day) he went to OpenOffice.org and downloaded OpenOffice yesterday and says it is working fine. I don't want him to have the same problem I am having after he keys in new files in OpenOffice. If you are someone can help I would appreciate it. I am essentially following the procedure you suggested, Tom.
Thanks for any effort you make to help,
JT
