I don't know why, but some posts to this lists are taking several days
to appear. You wrote that on 2/13 and it just appeared late on 2/17.
In the meantime I successfully removed 2.0.4, installed 2.1, discovered
that it was a mess, uninstalled it, then discovered I still had
remnants of 2.1, 2.0.4, 2.0.2 and even 1.1 on this computer. I spent an
hour searching the hard disk and deleting all of them, then reinstalled
2.0.4. It is now functioning as before -- that is, everything works
except the problem with drag and drop of text and the problem with some
settings in Tools > Options not being saved to the default template
both remain.

I just checked in Synaptic, and Ubuntu-Desktop was not installed. I
checked the list of dependencies and it is as long as my arm! I marked
it for installation and it not only wanted to install a dozen things
that I didn't have any use for, but it also wanted to uninstall oooqs
(the quickstarter) and install instead openoffice.org-gnome. I
installed in in the hope that doing so might fix the other problems.
Sadly, it made no difference at all. :(

Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion.
