customizable on the download so that I can install only the Impress portion

If not, you can simple ignore the Writer/Calc/Base portions.
Second, If I install the Openoffice program without having
the existing MS Powerpoint program, will I be able to read and convert these
files as needed?
That's the point! Impress gives you PP-like capabilities (there are some things
it won't do) at no cost whatsoever!!!
