Subject: Re: [users] OpenOffice for OS/2
I did try google... but all I can find is a version available "for
immediate download...to all customers of
an active Support Agreement for OpenOffice.org for eComStation and IBM
OS/2 "
As I don't particularly want a support agreement his isn't relevant
to me and I was wondering if anyone on here knew of a generic OO
version for OS/2.
Tom:
Work is ongoing to create a port to OS/2 of the current version. This
is most interesting as Star Office was originally built to run on OS/2
by the German team (OS/2 had a much larger following in Europe
as does Linux because MS could not enforce their policies on
computer sellers as they could in the United States (we are more
of a commodity marketplace where the lowest price rules sales.))
I don't know if Sun stopped work on this version or if the project
stopped due to a lack of knowledgeable programmers.
This is also part of the reason that the Video Control Layer (VCL)
was written in Windows16 code. Both Windows and OS/2 used this
common code until the introduction of WindowsNT (this is when MS
made a complete break from IBM and thus OS/2.)
The porting page points to Innotek, but I am aware of a new
team working on an OS/2 port.

I can remember running Star Office on OS/2, as a replacement for the
OS/2 version of Lotus SmartSuite, and being very impressed.
I stopped using OS/2 only because the (Windows) applications I had to
run at company where I worked at time, evolved into a version that the
OS/2 virtual DOS/Windows system couldn't handle.
