     Their email client changed the .xls to .dat when they received 
it. It has nothing to do with OpenOffice.org nor Thunderbird.
     As a side note, I would suggest you upgrade your OOo version. 
1.9.122 was designed to be use for testing purpose only. It has some 
bugs in it that have been removed since then. And if you are using 
Windows, you will need to remove 1.9.122 before installing a later 
version. Presently, 2.1.0 is the production version, and 2.2.0 is due 
soon.
