A first comment about the tables idea, not a technical one, something
more general.
I think using frames for labels is a very natural idea - not
something to be different for its own sake. I really believe that the
developers of this features chose frames because it looked natural
to them, not because they wanted to be different than the competition
(though I don't know what was the state of the art more than ten
years ago).
The state of the art 10 years ago (and 18 years ago, when I first
switched from WordStar) was MS Word, much as it grieves me to say it,
given my total commitment to OpenOffice today:-)
Anyway, if tables turned out to be superior it surely would be a good
idea to use them.
I already discovered some things that are easier to do with frames
thouhg they are also possible with tables. As an example, if you
change the size of the first frame of a labels document all others
get the same size (even if the *content* of the labels isn't
synchronized). Doing this with OOo tables needs some more thinking of
the user or some new table features to avoid that. Let's see what
else comes up.
I'm not sure I can agree with this statement. Yes, changing the frame
size in the 'label' frame style does as you say, but the only obvious
reason to change the size of the label frame would be to create a new
template, and then you would have the problem of adjusting the layout to
suit the new label stock, adding rows and/or columns (with appropriate
spacing) plus the corresponding task of adding new frames.
I've just experimented with this method during the writing of this
commentary and I confess that I found it possible, but very tedious.
For a tabular change, it's very simple to just select the table and
adjust the height of the rows and the width of the columns, with new
rows and columns added or deleted as necessary.
I rest my case.
