There are problems with IE since many apps call IE directly
instead of calling the Default browser
There were 2 Mac viruses and 1 Linux one over the past year
accourding to CNN's web site, but not sucessfull, like Windows versions.
What I hate is the fact that Microsoft has re-written Office
so that their default file formats are their "open source"
formats that They are making sure it becomes an ISO
International standard so "everyone" must use their format
to do business, plus have a "filter" to read ODT format.
They are calling their open source formats as Vender Neutral,
that is a laugh.
Microsoft is doing their best to stop Open Source projects
from using their document formats and creating problems
with Vista from using older software and hardware not written
for Vista.
Over Half of my software is not Vista approved or compliant, with
the laptop being the best you could buy 2 years ago.
My next computer may come with Vista, but not for long.
I will end up converting it to Linux with WINE to run the
needed Windows Apps - Like my large collection of
Adobe software. Everything else will be Open Source
apps like Open Office and the Mozilla software.
The only thing I like about Windows XP is the ease of
use of a USB device. Other than that, Windows 98se
had everything I needed. If not I could always run Win 2000 pro
which works just as well as XP and runs faster by far.
I love Open Office, and have installed it on every
computer I work on or sell. I keep MS Office around
for those people who call me up with questions that
that I need to walk them through.
How many towns, states, schools, "countries" are not
using Open Office as their standard suite? I lost count.
I hope the Open Source community reduces MS to an
OS company, not an OS/APPS company.

with (friends systems, and a few university machines) I have had no
problem setting Firefox as the default browser.
Incidentally, this problem with IE being tied so close to the operating
system is the result of another MS lawsuit over forced bundling of IE.
MS claimed it had to be there, as it was part of the OS and sure enough,
when the next version of Windows appeared, it was. So MS deliberately
did that, in violation of good software engineering practices, solely to
back up a claim made in court. The world has been suffering for it ever
since.
I'm pretty sure that IE was bundled with Windows ever since version 3,
in 98SE. They did that to screw Spyglass out of the licensing fees for

You can thank MS for doing the above for much of the security problems
with Windows. You don't have anywhere near that level of risk with
anything else. For example, there has never been a viable virus for
Linux. I don't recall any for OS/2 either.
Thats because other systems:
a) have a clear line drawn between user apps and system apps. The
former cannot alter the latter
b) enforce and encourage the usage of the machine for everyday tasks
as a non-root (administrator) account.
How does this relate to Open Office? It doesn't, so the discussion is
off-topic for the OOo-users list. I recommend interested parties
research Thunderbird, Firefox, Linux, and other open source
alternatives to proprietary software. Security-wise, open source apps
have a much better security record than proprietary apps. I'm not
saying that because I am an advocate of open source. Rather, I am an
advocate of open source because it is true.
