I have recently changed my computer, and I have a lot of files from my old PC which were created using the Microsoft works word processor. How do I open these?

Conversion problems such as this are always best solved by saving documents in a suitable exchange format at the sending end rather than trying to import the existing format at the receiving end. So if you can, go back to your old computer and use Works to save the documents in a suitable format, e.g. Word, Rich Text Format, or plain text. You can then easily open these in OpenOffice.

If you cannot, here is one rather inelegant workaround:

o Download and install the (freeware) Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 from the Microsoft web site. (You will need this anyway, along with the similar Excel and Powerpoint viewers, if you are using OpenOffice.) o Open your Works files in this viewer. (The Word Viewer 2003 will read and display Works files, unlike the earlier 97 viewer, which didn't.)
o Select the entire document and copy the selection.
o Open OpenOffice Writer and paste into a new document.
o Save this as an OpenOffice document.
