What is the meaning of "LOOKUP is only retained for backwards compatibility."?
Does this mean LOOKUP will not be further developed and maybe discontinued in
a future release of OOo?

Does any one have specific experience with LOOKUP?

I think that's wrong - LOOKUP will only return the contents of a single
cell.

I remember seeing a comment recently to the effect that LOOKUP is only
retained for backwards compatibility. I've never used it but I believe that
Help is wrong in implying that you can enter an array as anything other than
a range of a single column or row. As your questions suggests, there is no
other syntax for entering an array, except possibly ;(A1;A4;B2;C3); - which
you could try.

It's unlikely that you need to use it. There are HLOOKUP, VLOOKUP and INDEX
with MATCH.
