This thread was _re the cent sign_ but Johnny Andersson's observations allow
us to generalize.
For some character, say upper-case lambda in the Arial font, look at it in
Character Map and in Insert Symbol in Word.
CharMap shows code U+039B .
Insert Symbol shows Character Code 039B and Shortcut 039B, Alt+X .
It is likewise for all other characters that are available in some font: if
the character is shown in CharMap as U+xyz , then Word shows the shortcut
xyz, Alt+x . So the Alt+x method allows you to produce [in Word] any
character available in the font. [As noted, leading zeros can be omitted;
furthermore, letters in the code can be typed upper or lower case.]
Notepad does not have the Insert Symbol feature, hence no built-in tricks
[such as the Alt+x method] for inserting symbols. As for Wordpad, I
apparently don't have it on my system -- but I suspect that it does have the
Insert Symbol feature, hence it is not surprising that it accepts the Alt+x
method for inserting symbols.
Bottom line: In Word [and, apparently, Wordpad], any character with
[Characer Map] code U+xyz can be inserted easily by typing xyz and then
Alt+x -- but apparently there is no equally easy way to do that in Writer.
