I don't know what you might be breaking. I do know that I have OOo
2.0.4 on my Ubuntu Edgy amd64 computer and that is one of several
things that is broken. It doesn't affect kerning particularly one way
or the other, but when it is turned on scrolling through the document
is not smooth and I have constant screen refreshes. This is especially
true if there are tables or graphics in the document. Since I use a lot
of tables I have to leave it turned off or OOo wll be all but unusable.
What is broken for me is that I can turn it off, but the setting cannot
be saved to the defalt template. (There are a number of other settings
that cannot be saved to the default template also.)

I have been using word processors and layout apps (QuarkXPress,
PageMaker, InDesign, Ventura, etc.) for several years. The idea of
using printer font metrics was that if your print driver is set to
substitute the printer's font for a particular font you have installed
on your computer you would have a more accurate screen display.
However, these days it is not common for people to rely on the fonts in
their printers. In fact, most drivers I see these days have "substitute
printer fonts" turned off by default.
