Dear Hagar,
I followed your advice and loaded Java.
I am using OOo.2.1.0 and I guess that is part of my problem because the
commands do not correspond to the explanation in the macro you sent me.
Following the steps of chapter 6.2 of the macro you sent, I went to
Customize - Menu - Add. In the category box, I could not find any
"OpenOffice.orgBASICMacros" but I found OpenOffice.orgMacros. I clicked on
all the "+" but could not find XrefHeadings. That is why I guessed that I
must have done chapter 6.1 (adding the library) wrong.
At chapter 6.1 of the macro, it is said:
Adding the library:
1.Tools > Macros > Macro... > Organizer > Libraries [I GUESS THIS SHOULD BE
TRANSLATED UNDER OOo.2.1.0 AS: TOOLS MACRO ORGANIZE DIALOGUES LIBRARIES]
2.Ensure that sOffice is selected for Application/Document [I COULD NOT FIND
THIS]
3.Click Append...[I COULD NOT FIND THIS]
4.Navigate to where this file is stored and select it, click Open
5.Uncheck Standard but ensure XrefHeadings is checked
6.If updating from an old version check Replace existing libraries
7.OK > Close > Close
I am sorry to bother you again, but could you give me the translation under
OOo.2.1.0 of the above commands of chapter 6.1 of the macro you sent me?
Thank you again.

Basically, you need Java to use OOo. A Google search should give you plenty
of hits to install Java.
Hagar.

Dear Hagar,
Thanks for your reply.
I tried what you said. I did find 'Category' and "OpenOffice.org BASIC
Macros". They were under Customize - Keyboard. I am not sure whether
this is the right place, because I was under the impression that I had to
go to Customize - Menu (where there is no 'Category').
Anyway, I tried to expand "+ OpenOffice.org BASIC Macros" and I got the
following message: "OpenOffice.org requires a Java runtime environment
(JRE) to perform this. Please install a JRE and restart OpenOffice.org"
This message instantly froze my Writer (the message would not go away even
by clicking on "OK") and I had to exit with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
I am just a below average user of a word processor and if it is getting
complex, maybe I should give up at this point. Do you know when the
mainstream Writer will have cross-references to heading numbers?
Thank you for your help so far.

I went as far as Section 6.2, and I guessed that "Configure" has become
"Customize" on the latest version of Writer, but then, I could not find
the "list box" with "OpenOffice.org BASIC Macros".
Bottom left of the dialog, there is a 'Category' area, bottom of list,
you'll find OpenOffice.org BASIC Macros, expand it until you find the
right macro.
