I then used writer, as you suggested, and found the second,
non-printing character is 2 vertical lines with a half sphere on the
top left side of the left vertical line.
Actually, that's a red herring, since the character you describe is
just a paragraph mark, and that will occur on the end of a Writer
document regardless of what you copied. So we still don't know what
is making the length of your "E" two, in fact.
Wait! It gets better. I then performed the len() function on a
cell in my 2006 sheet. I showed zero when empty, and 1 with a
letter, whether I exited with 'Enter' or an arrow.
I am beginning to think that the previous sheet was created with a
previous version of OOo, and therefore works differently.
Possibly.
This is something that the OOo gurus should look into.
