/usr/bin/javac

# javac -version
javac 1.5.0_10

I selected "tools/options/Java" but the add dialog asks me to choose a path.

You did not mention which OS you were/are using.

I'm using Linux (x86_64).

Though the headers show you're using Apple Mail.

Very weird.
Maybe the mail went through an Apple gateway.

When you start tools/options/java let it sit a second or 20, and it finds the version you have installed. At least mine did on an intel MacBook.

I have left it open and it is still empty. :-(

My install is 1.5.*, and located at /opt/jre1.5.0_01/bin/java.

the kubuntu looks like what you want;

/usr/bin/java

to verify, open a shell and type

which java

and that is what you want
