Dan's info is not strictly correct. They are not perfect but there
are many utilities available for around $30 (£15) that will enable
you to recover your files. I managed to do the same thing as you and
formatted my drive losing about 3 years of photos. I can't remember
the name of the program I used (though I'll try and search it out for
you) but I got back around 70-80% of them after installing windows on
top as well as formatting the drive.
One point to note is the more information you now put on that drive
the harder it will be to get back the files you have lost..
