Forwarding to unregistered OP

Harold,

How can an unregistered person post to this mailing list???

*Anybody* can send an e-mail to [email protected] which is how to send a message (question or answer [or spam :-( ]) to this list.

If you are not registered you get a "nag" auto-response (I think) but your message still makes it through to the list. The problem comes when someone tries to respond to a message sent by an unregistered OP. If the responder does not explicitly include the OP's e-mail address in the To: or Cc: list then the OP never sees the message - because s/he isn't registered.

If you want to check whether a message is from an unregistered user you need to be able to look at *all* the mail headers. If and only if the headers include "Delivered-To: moderator for [email protected]" the the sender is *not* registered.

I set up a filter in my e-mail program (I use Thunderbird for this list) that highlights messages in my inbox in red if they come from unregistered users. If I'm part of a "conversation" and I notice that someone hasn't included an unregistered e-mail address in his/her response then I'll usually forward the message to the OP; particularly if the message contains useful information.

Thunderbird lets you filter on the "Delivered-To" header; Outlook Express lets you see all the headers but doesn't let you filter on "Delivered-To"; the Gmail web interface doesn't even let you see all the headers so managing this list with that interface is well nigh impossible if you want to ensure unregistered OPs see your replies.

We have had the debate many times as to whether or not we ought to allow unregistered users to ask questions (or send answers). I'm not going to rehearse the arguments again now. If you are interested, please search the archives.
