Got it, thanks. I'm not sure what to suggest further. I'd still try news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.thunderbird which is much more active (IMO) than the forums. If I get a chance later I'll subscribe to the list (I don't and instead us gmane nntp which is, again IMHO, a much more reasonable way to do 'lists') and see if I can reproduce in Thunderbird.
