If "why is this" is your question, my answer would be that the reason is that MS Word does not support the international standard called "OpenDocument", which is the format that OpenOffice.org use if you don't tell it not to. So the problem does indeed seem to be an MS Word problem rather than an OpenOffice.org problem. But as far as I have heard, Microsoft seems to be working on OpenDocument support in some kind of way, so in the future this might not be a problem, but we are not there yet, are we? =)
