That's correct the way things are, but it wouldn't be very hard to incorporate in a table-based system. Even the "competition" have achieved it:-)
As the labels document is just a regular document that is created by a
Wizard it should be possible to create such a document based on a table
manually. Would you volunteer to create such a document for any label
format of your choice just for demonstration purposes? By playing around
with it it could be easier to grasp the difference and the possible
advantages and disadvantages (if there are any ;-)).
I assume that you are not asking me to write a Wizard, but merely to supply a table-based template?
Of course. :-)

I've created a few, both A4 and US sizes and they are available for download
from:

Thanks, got them and will play with them a bit.

Currently I understood that the main advantage of the tables approach is
the vertical alignment. Is there anything else that could be used as a
justification for the effort to change the wizard?
Only ease of manually creating new formats comes to mind presently. That was my secondary driver after vertical centring.

Isn't that what the wizard is for?

My bias is showing :-) I just feel more comfortable with tables and I know that I can work much more quickly - despite only 2 decimal place accuracy in the user interface. Now fixing that would be well received ;-)
