I would say this is an X11 problem. X11 is your windowing system,

In terms of updating I'm not sure what to suggest but I notice you
metion
that you have X11 version 1.0 and the update site says that you
must have
1.1 or higher to use that update.
Could you check in Software Update to make sure there are no
updates that
have been hidden.
I've checked Software Update, and it reports that no updates are
available.
When I downloaded the X11 package directly from the Apple website, it
would not install because it says that it is already installed.
I'm really not sure what to try next. Is there any way to get a more
helpful message than the error that appears?
There may be a problem with your software update; you say you have
all the
latest patches, but if you are running OSX 10.4.8 then this is not
true as
10.4.9 was released some time ago
I'm sorry, my mistake -- I am indeed running 10.4.9.
