Why not go further, and modulize the download ?

One download for OO, another for JRE, another for PIM, and why not one for the
dictionaries of each language the user wants ?

And if only one language has downloaded, the install process configs OO in
that language, if not asks what language should be used for the interface ?

I notice my en-US download seems to have downloaded and installed, without
asking me, dictionnaries for Dutch, Estonian, Polish and Swahili (!) is this
really what the average user needs ?

Cheers,

Ron.

Hi Ron,

My first reaction is that OOo seems to want to provide a simple
solution. Having a single download with everything makes things very
simple for end users.

That said, there seems to be an increasing trend in some software to
have a small installer download that then selectively downloads the
user requested options. That seems like it would add a fair bit of
complexity to the back end process -- and that means time and effort
not going to making OOo a better product to use.

While not everyone needs all the languages, many people (especially in
Europe) are multi-lingual and benefit from having their languages
automatically included.

It also simplifies the OOo group's job of getting a new release
together. They can whip out 1 massive update more quickly than 50
small updates that all need to be coordinated.

Chris
