In your screen shot, the formula extends from the margin to approximately 1.5 on the top ruler. This is the same width that it was on my pc. If you feel that it looks too narrow, could it be that the formula was originally created in a document setup in inches and you're displaying in centimeters? In regard to the formula changing, it sounds to me like there's a font problem. I tried changing my units to centimeter and loading the file, but realized that I'm still using v2.1 at home.
Sorry I can't be more help.

Hi Fibo,
I looked at your files in OOo and Word97. What you see in 6 and 8, I see
here. To me, there's no difference between semifinal and testdoc in
either Word or OOo. I can open semi in OOo, make a change, save as and
open the resulting file in Word97 and see the formula as it was in OOo.
I'll send you the file that I modified directly so you can check out my
result.

I've received your modified file, and here is what happened:
1- Wrote anything outside of the formula, and saved it as a .doc to my
HD. So far, so good.
2- Reopened it using OOo. The formula became narrow again, just as it
had in the original file. I've uploaded a screenshot to
http://img377.imageshack.us/my.php?image=schermatasemifinalmodopdb0.png
(please note that the zoom was set to 150% for readability).
3- Tried to edit the formula, and it turned into what you saw on
Testdoc6, just as it had in the original file.

For me, moving documents with formulas from word to OO and back has not
worked well. I either convert the document to pdf.

But then it cannot be edited anymore - at least not by OOo or MS Word.
