I have used OpenOffice on 3 pcs and loved it. I just got my first mac;
os tiger, x11 installed, etc. when i cpy openoffice into the
applications and then try to start it, an "xterm" box comes up and

Did you take a look at the installation instructions?

Is this a PPC Mac or an Intel Mac? OOo has different versions for each.
Which version of OOo did you download? It seems 2.2 needs the ultimate
version of X11 (1.1.3). While X11 sits on your Tiger install disks
(did you install X11User.pkg... do *not* use the X11sdk.pkg which is
for developers), once this is installed, you can get the update to
1.1.3 from the Apple site.
Be sure to have all the right versions...

Finally, you have to be a bit (?) patient the first time
OpenOffice.org starts up, because it installs usable versions of the
fonts etc... but I suppose that isn't really your problem.
