I am using openoffice.org2.0. It has worked fine for about a year, but
recently I cannot open my documents because of the following message, (which I
do
not know how to repair):

Either another instance of openoffice.org is accessing your personal
settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to
inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make
sure used SEAWARD/gladys closes open office.org on host 'Seaward'. Do you
really want to continue.
I would appreciate any help so that I could resolve this problem and open my
documents. Currently I am unable to use openoffice.org at all. Thanks for
your help, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED])

This message appears if you have had someone using OpenOffice on the
machine called "SEAWARD" which has exited abnormally. Because of this
OOo still has a 'lock' on running OOo for that user (in your case
"gladys")...

Below is from another user on this list:
You need to look for a file named "lock" in the following directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\.lock
- where <user> is the name in the error message (gladys).

Note that "Application Data" is a hidden folder, so you will have to
display these in order to find it and the folder it contains. The
".lock" file should appear when you start OpenOffice and be deleted
when you close all instances of it. So close OpenOffice (and
possibly even the Quickstarter in the taskbar) and then browse to the
.lock file; if it is still there, delete it.

Huh ?? Defender doesn't stop spyware (Webroot) ; firewall is only 50%
effective (Zdnet) ; UAC can be turned off and is annoying ; SP1 (incl
security reasons) due end of 2007...
